Denise Witt

My introduction to felting happened unexpectedly in 2018 when I received a wool felt holiday ornament. Along with it came a sample piece of wool "roving" dyed in a stunning blue hue. Intrigued by this unfamiliar material, I embarked on a journey of research, leading me to discover the captivating world of wet felting.

A Pivotal time in my life…

This newfound passion took root during a pivotal time in my life. Following a life-altering accident, Duke Hospital became my sanctuary, where dedicated physicians, nurses, and aides saved my life during an extended hospitalization. The realization that I could no longer provide care to my patients as a nurse reshaped my trajectory. It was during this period of recovery that I stumbled upon my hidden acquired savant talent – wet felting.

Originated in

North Carolina

I have two studios I’m lucky to work out of. One is located in North Durham NC with a view of old oaks and pines and if I’m lucky enough I see the local wildlife.

My other studio is in Oak Island NC which is located right on the ocean beachfront! My “ocean” studio generates a much different creative vibe. From both studios I do sell locally in downtown Durham and in OKI/Southport.

My Journey

As a self-taught learner this creative side of me needed a lot of permission to fail and embrace imperfection. One of the realizations was that wet felting with various materials is in fact a science. Every type of natural fiber reacts differently with each other and it’s truly fascinating to see. I hand dye my silk in my non-smoking, pet free studio. My newly found artwork is a gift I treasure every day.

So, as developing artist my family and friends have encouraged me to pursue my interest, dreams and passion for this work that I hold dear. Each piece I make is filled with love and positive energy for others to enjoy.
